Living in San Diego
The Basics
Housing. As a UCSD Graduate Student or LJI Postdoc, you will make your own housing arrangement. Several links present on this page should help you find the perfect spot. Often, apartments become available as other postdocs and students from the previous years relocate which sometimes gets included in an email to the labs. UCSD has an off-campus housing page with great info as well as where to search. Zillow or Craiglist are the most common used website to find apartments or homes.
Transportation. Public transportation within San Diego is not so bad. However, having a car makes getting around much easier. If you plan to commute by bus from a location in San Diego, a monthly bus pass is around $72. There is free shuttle bus service between the UCSD campuses and hospitals which go through LJI and SCRM. Riding a bike is highly recommended!
Weather. The weather in San Diego is usually sunshine and light breezes all year which allows for outdoor activities to be enjoyed all year around. Our Institute is located in one of the best locations as it stays cooler being so close to the ocean. More inland San Diego is much warmer being a desert.
Activities at LJI
At LJI, there are multiple seminars a week with internal and external presenters. You will also be made aware of seminars and events that are located at neighboring institutes as well as at UCSD. We also have monthly happy hours hosted by labs throughout LJI and the La Jolla Postdoc Association (LPA). All this information is posted and circulated at LJI.
Fitness and Recreation are important activities around here. LJI offers free yoga classes weekly. Foosball and ping pong tables located on the back patio. There are monthly wellness challenges that include raffle prizes if you enter them.
